Starting an online store can be very rewarding and also extremely difficult and frustrating. While the barriers of entry are lower than ever, you still need to do some research before diving into it. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes that people don’t realize when they first start out; little steps you need to take early on can really add up and help you in the long run. If you’re looking to start your own online store, then here are a few things to keep in mind when starting out.
1. Keep Your Eye On The Prize
You have been working day and night for months trying to get this store finalized by running WordPress on AWS. You finally launched, and you’re on the home stretch, then the first sale! Congratulations, you are officially a digital retailer. It feels great to see that “Made It” screen, but now is not the time to celebrate yet. Just because one customer makes it through your front door does not mean they are satisfied with what they have seen.
2. A Customer Is Not Always Right, However…
This may sound strange, but just because you are the person that built this store does not mean that everything you say or do is correct. No matter how experienced you are in your niche, there will always be customers that come up with something you have never heard of before. It’s important to keep an open mind when it comes to problems/concerns from customers. Never assume that they are wrong, even if their concern seems completely unreasonable to you personally.
3. Keep Your Promotions Consistent
Promotions are a great way to build your store’s brand and bring in new customers, as well as retain current ones. The key to promotions is to make them as consistent as possible. If you announce a sale for one week only and it ends up running into the next week because you forgot to send it on time, then you are sending mixed signals about your store and what you stand for. It can be confusing to customers; they will not know if the sale is supposed to keep running or if it ended, so they may make a hasty purchase before realizing that it’s no longer on sale.
4. Offer Free Shipping Whenever Possible
It is important to attract as many new or current customers as possible by offering free shipping on your store’s website. If you are not offering free shipping, then it can be very expensive to actually start this type of system, particularly if you have a high number of items in your inventory since the shipping costs will add up quickly. This can possibly deter customers from purchasing multiple items that could have been sold if they weren’t put off by the high shipping costs.
5. Know Your Customers
You can never know too much about your customers, and this is especially true when you are working to increase sales for your store. You need to take time out of every day to do some research on the people who are looking at or buying from your site. It’s necessary that you get a feel for your target market so that you can better cater to their needs.
In Closing
As you can see, running a digital store is not as simple as it may seem. There are many things that can go wrong if you do not stay on top of your game and try to avoid mistakes at all costs.
